We write because we’re weird enough to be entertaining, we want to create inspiration, destroy despair, grieve.

We write because we never grew up, because our fathers wrote, because writing is shelter from the storm.

We write because some stories linger and we want to be heard. We write because we have felt invisible. We write because we have an obligation. We write to pervert and contort history. We write because a well-penned letter might free a prisoner unjustly imprisoned.

We write because we are mothers of sons, of daughters, we are daughters, we are sons, we want to impress our fathers, because we are trying to make a good thing that will last….  We write because we love.

We write because our heroes are Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, Shakespeare, Sylvia Plath, Mark Twain, Virginia Woolf, Laura Ingalls, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Roald Dahl, Lois Lenski. We write because books are filled with wisdom.

We write because of love, loss, death, racism, blood quantum, suffering, song and we write because pen and paper are cheap and imagination is portable. We write because we can’t create a better world until we see it, because life is too important to not notice its details and we want to hold onto life as it passes by.

We write because.
